people. The Brahmaputra and the Barak River have more than 50 tributaries,
which cause flood devastation every year during the monsoon period. Assam is
almost entirely inhabited by river valleys. The geographical area of Assam is
78,438 km, of which 56,194 km is covered by the Brahmaputra valley. With two
hilly districts, the Barak River Valley forms the remaining 22,244 km of the state.
With two rivers, 48 major tributaries and several tributaries flowing into its
valleys, Assam’s river network leaves about 40 per cent of the state’s flood-prone
area. So far, 5635 villages have been lost in Assam due to erosion of the
Brahmaputra. Till date, the Water Resources Department of Assam has not
implemented any long-term measures to tackle the erosion problems of the state.
The department has constructed 4,473 km of new embankments and strengthened
655 km of embankments so far. According to the department, however, the
embankments are usually broken due to edge erosion.
