BJP gains in GHMC Elections

  • @Rakesh Agarwal

New Delhi: BJP gains in the Continuing its stellar performance in Bihar, BJP

has gained major victory in recently concluded Greater Hyderabad Municipal

Corporation (GHMC) elections. The elections to the 150 seats were held on

December 01, 2020. The Corporation as constituted in 2016 had 99

counsellors of Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS), the party led by Chief

Minister K Chadrashekhar Rao (KCR), while BJP had only 4 counsellors.

Asaduddin Owaisi’s party All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM)

had 44 counsellors.  There were 2 counsellors of Congress and Telugu Desam

Party (TDP) had only 1 counsellor. TRS was supported by AIMIM in 2016

elections. However, TRS broke the ties with AIMIM in November this year and

contested in all 150 wards alone. BJP contested in 149 wards while Congress,

TDP and AIMIM contested in 146, 106 and 51 wards respectively.

BJP gains is proved in percentage also

The voting percentage (46.6%) was little higher than 2016 (46%). The results

were declared on December 04, 2020. BJP won in 48 wards improving its last

performance to its great satisfaction. TRS emerged as single largest party

winning in 55 wards. There is no change in the fortunes of AIMIM and

retained its 44 seats. Congress could not improve its tally and won in 2 wards

as in 2016. Result of 1 seat remained undeclared till Saturday morning.

Though TRS emerged as single largest party, it could not repeat it past

performance and suffered huge loss of 44 seats. BJP gained 44 seats and is

just short of TRS by 7 seats, a major setback to Chief Minister KCR in view of

ensuing State Assembly election scheduled in 2023.

Hyderabad witnessed Large level election first time

For the first time a municipal corporation election was contested at such a

large magnitude in Hyderabad.  Prime Minister Narendra Modi himself

spearheaded an aggressive campaigning along with his cabinet colleagues

including Amit Shah, Party President J P Nadda and UP Chief Minister Yogi

Adityanath. Other parties also put in their all resources to woo the voters. TRS

coloured entire GHMC area into pink. AIMIM was also very aggressive and

targeted Modi and KCR-led governments in his campaigning. He did his best

to connect with voters even riding on motorcycle. BJP’s stunning show in

Hyderabad is remarkable when it has only 1 seat in State Assembly and will

have far reaching consequences in entire South Indian States especially Tamil

Nadu and West Bengal, where Assembly elections are due next year. With

Rajnikanth announcing his decision to launch his political party in January

2021 and to contest the upcoming Assembly election and Assaduddin Owaisi

entering in to West Bengal, the elections to these two States would be

interesting to watch.
