Ranchi: Plastic will eat and destroy itself. That is, it will no longer be a problem

for our environment in the future. There has been success in making one-time use

plastic that will eat and finish itself in two weeks. This has provided a successful

route to get rid of the ever increasing problems caused by plastics all over the

world. At present, the collection of plastic waste has become a major threat to the

whole world. Even in the depths of the sea, this pollution is increasingly harming

marine life and the environment. Perhaps this path of liberation will prove to be a

better option. Scientists at Berkeley Lab and University of California have

successfully carried out this experiment. These scientists have added an enzyme

inside the plastic that will eliminate it by eating it on its own. That is, it will

automatically make compost grade plastic within two weeks of lying on the

ground. Due to this, the threat of plastic on the barren fields or marine life will be

worked out faster. The material left with this will be recycled again and it will not

become waste. For this, scientists have added monomer to it, which destroys it by

eating itself. Ting Xu, a senior scientist associated with this research, said that

when we or any living creature dies, only the enzyme inside the body destroys us.

Based on this thinking, this new type of plastic has been developed. Ting Xu is a

professor of chemistry and materials science at this university.

Currently, only nine percent of the world’s plastic is being recycled. Apart from

this, the rest of the land is reaching the sea with the rivers, making the land barren

at some level and becoming a threat to the whole world. Biodegradable plastic

bags are being made but due to their not being recycled properly, the problem is

increasing. There is also the danger that such plastics take a lot of time to destroy

on their own. Meanwhile, they reach the stomach of the cattle and create a new

type of trouble. Keeping all these problems in mind, Xu and his colleagues have

completed this work. In carrying out this work, scientists of many departments

have completed the work together. Xu and his team have chosen an entirely new

way to deal with this problem. These people worked on the method of adding

enzymes at the nano level in plastics. For this, the team experimented in many

ways and eliminated roadblocks one by one. Xu and his team carried on this work

via commercial enzymes and incorporated protinase K with the Bucholderia

cipacian enzyme. An enzyme Protectant named Four Monomer was also added to

this. Scientists found that normal tap water or normal ground compost helped in

rapid breakdown of its structure and within a few days it was clearly visible.

Research has shown that BC Lipase is proving to be a plastic eater. It captures one

end of the polymer and consumes it until the end. This process is accelerated

when exposed to hot water or compost.

Plastic will be destroyed by normal water or soil

Giving detailed information about it, it has been told that this type of plastic can

be kept safe for seven months. Also, its cost is not excessive. It can become a

better alternative to all types of plastics commonly used in household work. Now

this team has applied for its patent. Encouraged by this initial achievement, the

research team has started its research towards making similar improvements in

plastic-based toys and electronic products.
